What is a Postpartum Doula?

Neewborn baby with its hands near its head and a smile on its face laying asleep atop a pile of soft blankets. The newborne is wearing a white onesie with buttons.

A postpartum doula is your essential ally during the initial days and weeks after your baby arrives. Think of us as your extra pair of hands and a comforting presence, ready to assist you through this beautiful yet challenging transition. We understand that new parents often feel the absence of a supportive village, and we're here to bridge that gap with warmth, education, and practical help.

Meet Our Postpartum Doula

I’m Rachel,

I feel so lucky to call myself a doula and childbirth educator. The heart of my work is to bring a sense of calm and trust to your birth and postpartum experience. I believe that every journey into parenthood is unique and deserves personalized support and care.

My interest in pregnancy and birth began early; at the age of four, I watched β€œThe Miracle of Life” on VHS and was fascinated. My lifelong passion for health and wellness has guided my career from professional dancer to holistic nutritionist to yoga teacher and now doula. This dynamic experience uniquely equips me to support my clients in a way that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit.

I am deeply committed to providing evidence-based information in a way that is easy to understand. My goal is to empower and comfort you as you navigate the wide range of emotions that accompany pregnancy, birth, and the fourth trimesterβ€”whether you find them peaceful, powerful, daunting, transformative, joyous, raw, vulnerable, or all of the above.

As a fifth-generation Coloradan, I’m proud to raise my own family in Denver. My husband and I welcomed our first baby in 2023, and we love sharing the joys of cooking, hiking, skiing, traveling, and live music with our son.

I am so excited to be on your birth team and honored to guide you as you welcome your new baby into the world!

  • I delivered in December 2022 and had Rachel Strother as my doula. As I moved cross-country in my 3rd trimester, I first connected with and hired Rachel long distance. Even without meeting Rachel in person, I could feel her relaxed, nonjudgmental energy through the phone-energy that proved irreplaceable throughout my labor/delivery process and postpartum recovery. During my labor/birth, Rachel acted as a seamless extension of the hospital L&D team. Her calming energy was extra beneficial when my baby's heart rate was not recovering quickly enough after contractions. Rachel helped the L&D team flip me into different positions, which ultimately spared me from an emergency c-section. Though a potential c-section was scary, I felt mentally prepared due to previous conversations with Rachel where she explained the exact circumstance in which a baby's heart rate does better when the mom is flipped in different positions. Rachel was on top of her game for all of my labor-helping hospital staff, fielding my husband's questions, helping me think through doctor's recommendations, and making sure all my needs were met. At any point I could turn to Rachel and ask, "How should I think about this?", which helped me focus on my sole task of delivering the baby, took pressure off my husband, and saved my limited mental energy. I deviated from my birth preferences and got an epidural when my contractions became too intense. To be honest, I previously thought, "What's the point of hiring a doula if I get an epidural?!" but 10/10 would hire again, and would hire Rachel again! When Rachel wasn't coaching me through pain management, she was an invaluable part of my birth team-coaching me through pushing, expanding/explaining recommendations from hospital staff, and providing postpartum support. I surprised myself by communicating with Rachel most for postpartum questions and am so glad to have her for continued support. One of the hardest parts of pregnancy and parenting is reconciling all the varying opinions on the internet, and Rachel continually surprises me with the depth of her knowledge regarding my various questions and concerns. It's clear Rachel loves what she does and I consider myself lucky to connect with and work with her.

  • Rachel is absolutely amazing. She was such a perfect addition to our birth, and provided seamless support. We loved having her around, and she helped me feel much more comfortable during a long induction. She was in tune with me throughout our birth, and is an absolutely amazing body worker. She also took beautiful pictures and was just fun to have around!

  • We couldn't imagine our birth without our doula Rachel Strothers. She was absolutely incredible and proved to be so vital to the birth of our son. From the very first meeting she was able to provide a grounding energy that would carry us through the entire process. This was our first child and she helped paint the picture of what to expect from start to finish, what challenges we might encounter, decisions we might have to make and was able to help translate medical jargon into something understandable. We had a bit of a tough birth process in that we experienced a few complications during labor, and Rachel was there every step of the way massaging and comforting my wife, advising us when to take certain steps (like getting in the tub), and making sure we both had what we needed. As the husband Rachel's comfort measures allowed me to have more face to face time with my wife so I could comfort and support her in ways that only I could. Most importantly, when we were told we had to have an emergency c-section, she was with us throughout the whole procedure. She was able to take some amazing photos for us and was there to hold my wife's hand while the surgeons helped stitch her up, which allowed me to spend those first few minutes with my son to clean him up, weigh him and cut the cord. I can't imagine leaving my wife's side had Rachel not been there. We cannot recommend Rachel and Intuitive Birth more! For anyone thinking of getting a doula...do it! I promise you won't regret it.

  • Rachel Strother was an incredible birth doula. Words really cannot express how thankful I was to have her there throughout my journey. This was my first child. Mentally I had a challenging pregnancy and Rachel was always quick to offer up resources and suggestions for me. She checked in often and helped me work through my fears/anxiety around labor beforehand - which gave me confidence going into my birthing experience. I couldn't have asked for a better person to help me through labor and delivery. Rachel was so knowledgeable and helpful throughout my induction. She gave lots of helpful, soothing advice and wisdom. When I had heavy back labor she had me try different positions that eventually put my girl in the right position. She was right there with me to support both my and my husband throughout the process. When things didn't go to plan during the after-north, Rachel stayed by my side and helped me endure an unexpected curve ball. Without her I wouldn't have been able to remain calm and collected and it likely would have caused some trauma, but thanks to her soothing words and staying by my side, I had an overall lovely birthing experience.

  • We had the best experience working with Rachel. Labor and delivery is scary, especially the first time around. Rachel came over for prenatal visits and explained the process, discussed options and provided tips for preparing. Her presence during my labor and delivery made a stressful situation enjoyable and the birth of our baby such a beautiful experience. She calmly explained things to us, supported us through making decisions, and did lots of massage which was amazing! For anyone who is on the fence, hire a doula. I highly recommend Intuitive Birth.

  • My wife and I worked with Rachel who was amazing. We could not have asked for a better guide through this journey! Rachel was communicative, attentive to our specialized requests & needs at any time, proactive in her approach, and had answers to all of our questions. As my wife put it, "Rachel eased my concerns and helped me feel less overwhelmed by all of the information out there. She was my one stop shop, my google, to answer any question I had." During the delivery, nurses and the doctor were in and out of the delivery room frequently. They spoke in medical terms we weren't familiar with. It was nice to have Rachel in the room with us the whole time to be our familiar face, calming presence, and be able to translate all of the medical speak. We had a fantastic experience with Rachel and would recommend her to any and all family/friends in the area. Thank you again Rachel! :)

  • Rachel was our doula for the birth of our first child, and I can't imagine not having her support before, during, and after the birth. I highly recommend Rachel as a doula, especially for first-time parents - her even-keeled, perceptive, and sincere personality was a great fit and made all the difference for us in feeling supported, empowered, and nurtured. The OB who delivered our baby made a point to tell us afterwards that Rachel embodies exactly what she (the OB) would want in the ideal doula and marveled at how well she fit into the care team attending our birth - which speaks volumes about Rachel's ability to work seamlessly with clinicians and provide incredible support to the expectant parents (especially the momma). In the final months leading up to our baby's arrival, Rachel prepared both my husband and me for what to expect during labor and delivery, provided invaluable counsel when grappling with certain decisions, and was such a calming presence when it was go-time. I really appreciated how hands-on and nurturing Rachel was during labor and delivery - talking me through contractions and providing massage therapy throughout the whole process was exactly what I didn't know I needed to feel more at ease and comfortable. Having Rachel at our side was so reassuring, and I would go through the whole process with her again in a heartbeat because it was so amazing! Rachel has also extended postpartum doula support to us with nourishing meals and help with our little one, which we very much recommend!

  • A professionally trained and experienced labor companion, a doula offers continuous mental, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after labor. They assist and support the mother and her partner achieve their birthing goals. Consider them akin to a specialized massage therapist for women in labor, a trusted birth advisor, and a compassionate therapist all rolled into one!

  • Giving birth can be stressful and unpredictable, especially for first-time mothers. Having a doula by your side is like having your best friend, an expert in birth, ensuring you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process. Here are some compelling statistics: Births attended by doulas reduce the risk of Cesarean section by 50%, shorten labor duration by 25%, decrease the use of pitocin by 40%, lower epidural requests by 60%, and reduce forceps or vacuum deliveries by 40%. Women supported by doulas also experience lower rates of postpartum depression, report higher satisfaction with their birth experiences, find the transition into motherhood smoother, and are more successful at breastfeeding.
Doulas provide support once active labor begins, helping parents recognize the right time to go to the hospital. This guidance is precious for first-time parents needing advice on when to seek medical assistance.

  • Absolutely not! A doula doesn't replace the birth partner; instead, they complement each other. Doulas offer invaluable support to partners by guiding them on how to assist the mother best and providing them with opportunities to rest and recharge. Working closely with the birth partner, doulas leverage their training and expertise to actively empower partners to participate in the labor and birth process. After all, it takes teamwork to ensure a mother's comfort and well-being during labor!

  • Regardless of the circumstances leading up to the birth, a doula is steadfast in providing unwavering support to parents. Even in planned or unplanned situations requiring a trip to the Operating Room, doulas are often permitted to accompany parents. And don't fretβ€”while we're there, we'll capture those priceless moments of meeting your baby, ensuring you have beautiful memories to cherish forever!

  • No, doulas are there to support parents in achieving their birthing preferences, regardless of whether they desire a medicated or unmedicated birth or whether they have an at-home or in-hospital setting.
